It's meaning does summarize fairly well, what exactly a blog is, a place online where you can write your log, or diary.
Many people use this method to keep their friends up to date on goings on in their life, holidays, events, etc.
However this blogging system can be used as a very useful tool for a business, it is a place where you can keep people updated on events, news, and new things that are happening. By using a blog, you make sure that there is new content on your site, and as a result of that people will be more inclined to come visit your site more regularly.
Search engines also love blogs, they love new and current content.
Blogs are also a great way to personalize your site, you can speak about topic that effect you as a person, and from there develop a community of like minded individuals.
It will create more work for you, it does require maintenance and some moderation if you enable people to make comments, but other than that, it is a great tool that I encourage people to look into.
